Around July of '07 my marriage of 7 years came to an end.. That's a whole unbelievable (literally) blog in itself, but the point is that I've always been intrigued by interesting travels. As a programmer, I work remote and as long as I've got cel and internet connectivity with my wireless broadband card, I'm good to go. Ultimately I would like to backpack through Europe, but first, I'm taking a smaller trek out west to get a little experience with travels of larger magnitude (view my route at the right of this page). This site will be a place for me to chronicle my travels, leave some photos, and jot down any interesting things that happen that I might one day forget.

I made it..

Saturday, September 8, 2007 11:15 AM - Took about 4 hours exactly of breathtaking views and some serious devastation to my muscles and knees. The hikers here going up and down the Kaibab Trail (the trail from the top to bottom) are somewhat infrequent, but very nice. We are generally all doing the same thing, so when you see someone you generally stop and chat for a few. I got my first machete comment of my journey today by a dredded dude that was coming up the trail. I think my weapon made him a little uncomfortable.

I packed everything in my bag this morning around 6:00 AM and tied my tent to it as well. It took me about 20 seconds of walking to realize that though I may be able to lug that thing down, there was no way in heck I was lugging it back up. I decided to leave it, just take the bare necessities (food and water), and sleep on the ground under the stars.

I was the first one to my campsite when I hit the bottom this morning, and the sites are first come first serve, so I got to survey all sites and choose the best one. Since I don't have a tent, blanket, or even a pillow, I needed to find a site to help me out a little - and I found it. One site had a nice little perch in the dirt, which was soft, and was sheltered by a full tree with foliage surrounding the whole thing.

My initial descent during sunrise - I was attempting to race the sun down the canyon to avoid the heat

A view of the canyon through some foliage

The Supai Tunnel, 1.6 miles down. A good place to recharge and get some water

A view of a small bit of the Kaibab Trail. If you click this picture you can see some of my trail down below. This is a very small portion of the trail, as it winds around the furthest bend and continues on for a while.

The Colorado running through the bottom of the canyon

Still got a ways to go.

Aaanndd folks if you look to your left you'll see the grand canyon. Haha suckahz!@#!

Did you play the "don't step in the donkey shit" game? How far did you go down the kalibab? If you stopped at the "recommended" day hike I will be dissapointed, as you've got to ignore the warnings and head out the point and see the river!

Nevermind...you went one step better and camped at the bottom!
